Enter Escape Town: Fabio & Moon, Live at the Side Show

Cape Town lies the old Vaudeville building

Tucked away in the fringes of inner city Cape Town lies the old Vaudeville building, home to The Side Show.  True to its name, guests are transported to risqué playground of a bygone era – a labyrinth of exotic bars, lush private booths and a vivid dance floor complete with dancing cages and podiums  – this is the real Balkan Circus meets Moroccan-mayhem experience. While those on the outdoor deck are watched over by Table Mountain and the city skyline, the split-level main hall is gazed over by a huge eerie, disembodied doll head whose fractured facial expressions jog with the beat of the music. Slick.

This past weekend, the Side Show’s crowds were given a good dose more than eerie faces and show-girls when international progressive trance legends Fabio & Moon arrived in town.  Having ripped up festivals and dance floors the world over, this German duo needs no introduction. Signed to renowned record label Spintwist alongside the likes of Day Din and Neelix, Fabio Fusco and Benni (Moon) Glowarzki kick out some seriously fresh ‘n frisky progressive pleasure!

Performing alongside Fabio & Moon was a host of local electronic talent including Gokon Rave, Dean Fuel (Feedback), Bruce, The Commercial Hippies, Deadbeat FM, Wulfsohn, Dranged, Humerous and Mad Piper – the evening was set to create audio enchantment on a massive scale!

Queues formed outside as diehard fans arrived early, eager to claim a rail-clinging spot at the front of the dance floor. First up was Gokon Rave, banging out some elastic psy tech to get the night into gear.  Relatively new on the scene, this duo has rapidly gathered a solid following in Cape Town’s underground movement over the past two years. With some epic tracks and remixes out, including their newest offering ‘Hammer Time’, these guys spun together a find blend of minimal tech and progressive trance that laid down the base work for an epic audial journey.

No stranger to South Africa’s dance scene, deck master Dean Fuel took centre stage to keep the rage going. Having played alongside the likes of Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, David Guetta and Tiesto, he is without a doubt one of South Africa’s finest dance exports. His music is a synthesis of transnational electro, tech, minimal and trance which, as always, provided infectious energy for the crowd. Under his newly styled alias ‘Feedback’, his most recent tracks dish out techy percussion and sexy uplifting psy.

Handing over the turntables to Stereotype, this local duo was poised to open for Fabio & Moon with a massive set. Members Mark Valsecchi and Byron Kleb have both been involved in the electronic scene for some time now and pair together to bring out some bouncy psy tech and progressive trance. With influences like Neelix , Symphonix and Ritmo, Stereotype have plunged into a dimension of unique progressive bliss.  Having had a great season at the likes of Equinox and Origin Festival, it was a real crowd-pleaser having Stereotype perform.

Another Equinox player performing was Wulfsohn. This young DJ has made a mark for himself over the past season past and continues to bring smooth psychedelic excitement to the table. He kept things lively upstairs with some action packed psychedelic beats and Goa and tech influences.

By the time Fabio & Moon were on people really had their party faces going. To a sea of hands in the air, they took to the stage lifting off with some worthy favourites like ‘Not Like The Otherz’, ‘Flanders’ and ‘Grab a Trap’.  The floorboards rocked with bass and heavy beats, spurred on by plenty of psychedelic stomping by a packed dance floor. With their debut EP ‘The Disco Damage’ having reached number one on Beatport charts, it’s only been onwards and upwards for this duo.  Spinning live remixes and tracks from their latest EP ‘Crazy Trip’, Fabio & Moon delivered fresh, funky, break-beat progressive trance, served hot by The Side Show’s new sound system. Generally vocal and elevating, their set was testament to the unique name they have built for themselves over the last six years – dynamic, fresh and playful progressive trance. With a 2 hour set, fans were given a real treat by this truly global duo. One guest commented on the Facebook event saying “this was my favourite indoor trance party… ever”.

No party in Cape Town ever ends early and the beats continued to flow well into Sunday morning with sets by the likes of Humerous (PsynOpticz Productions), Bruce, Deadbeat FM, The Commercial Hippies (Nano Records), Mad Piper (NeXus Media) and Dranged. The crowds stayed, the music pumped and the night lived forever. Thank you Side Show. Thank you Fabio & Moon. Thank you Cape Town.
